Shaktika
for Women
The Shaktika 'Power to Women' programme through various
forms of creative endeavours is devised to give rural and
tribal women an opportunity to develop latent skills that
are part of their indigenous heritage. The programme looks
upon women's culture as a source of power and a significant
resource for their empowerment. An important area of their
culturally rooted strength in West Bengal is the variety
of craft skills that are part of women's heritage. The centre
proposes to start a capacity building self-help group whereby
the rural and tribal women living in that area are given
training in forms of 'green' creativity. These would involve
creating new forms Kantha embroidery with eco-centric designs
and other forms of skills such as indigenous knowledge resources
that are fast disappearing.
