Charaka
Bagan: Ayurvedic Garden of Medicinal Plants
The
Vedic Index lists as many as 260 medicinal herbs. The Charak
Samhita, an ancient manual on Ayurveda, attributed to sage
Charak lists 500 medicinal plants, while Sushruta’s lists
mentioned 385. It is agreed that there are 927 plants of
therapeutic value.
The
Shri Kunja is creating a garden of over 500 varities of
medicinal plants and healing herbs mentioned in the Charka
Samhita and the Atharva Veda. It will serve as an educational
site for botanists and lay persons.
The
Charaka Bagan will also conserve local varieties of healing
herbs in the area, and generate interest on conservation
of nature among young adults, rural folk, voluntary workers
and environmentalists.
Primary
Health Care through Plants
One
main aim of preserving the garden is to hold training workshops
and impart indigenous knowledge about the efficiency of
healing herbs and plants in primary health care.
